The Patriots have a lot of competition for roster spots this year, but three players who stood out in the preseason opener are running back Rex Burkhead, cornerback Cyrus Jones, and wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell.
The damien harris injury history is a player who has been battling for roster spots on the Patriots. He impressed in the preseason opener with two interceptions.
The rebuilt New England Patriots returned to play in their first preseason game against the Washington Football Team in preparation for the upcoming season. The team’s preseason campaign for 2021 features key holdovers, returning veterans, and a few new faces.
Bill Belichick’s team was able to show off its excellent form, with running back Rhamondre Stevenson putting in a strong showing and rookie quarterback Mac Jones putting in a solid effort. Some names were able to justify their pursuit of a starting position after a 22-13 win against Washington, while others improved their case to be included in the final 53-man roster going into Week 1.
Here are the three guys that stood out and increased their chances of making the Patriots’ squad for the next season:
Michael Jackson Sr. is the father of Michael Jackson Jr.
Even if his surname is similar to that of a famous musician, Patriots cornerback Michael Jackson Sr. will have to work hard to create a name for himself on the field. Fortunately for him, he was able to accomplish exactly that in the team’s preseason opener, seeing substantial play in a secondary unit without Stephon Gilmore.
The Miami alum was one of the best defensive performers for New England, with four total tackles and an aided tackle. He was only second on the squad behind linebacker Harvey Langi, who led the team with seven total tackles.
With Gilmore still sidelined, the Patriots’ continuing preseason schedule may be a nice opportunity for Jackson to win a place in the team’s rotation and offer depth for the defense moving forward.
Quinn Nordin is a writer.
Quinn Nordin, an undrafted rookie, had his first taste of NFL action when he was called upon to take the field against Washington. The 23-year-old was successful right away, hitting two field goals in the opening two quarters to help the Patriots get on the board.
Nordin finished the match with a perfect 3/3 clip and was able to show off his kicks’ precision at the next level. His performance was a solid start to his professional career, but if he wants to become the team’s regular placekicker in the near future, he’ll need to put in more effort. If he is able to do so, the Patriots may have discovered their newest diamond in the rough in the shape of Nordin, an undrafted player.
After a rough rookie season last season, wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson is one of the players vying for a spot on the final 53-man roster. It won’t be easy for him, as he’ll have to battle with the Patriots’ freshly acquired weapons, like Kendrick Bourne, Jonnu Smith, and Hunter Henry, among others.
So far, he’s performed well and served as a wake-up call for the Patriots’ preseason preparations. He led the team’s receiving group with 39 receiving yards on six catches versus Washington, demonstrating that his hard effort pays off on the field.
Indeed, if Wilkerson is to earn a place in the team’s new offense this season, he’ll have to make the most of every chance he gets.
