WASHINGTON, D.C., is home to a number of museums, including one dedicated to the African diaspora. President Barack Obama opened the Smithsonian National Museum of African American Heritage and Culture in 2016, praising numerous efforts to preserve and interpret black history. The 37,000 exhibits, some of which have been passed down through generations, need repeated visits. Artifacts commemorating well-known, unknown, and underappreciated achievements elicit feelings of nostalgia and pride. Anger and sorrow are fueled by the number of lives lost and damaged as a result of injustice. The design is fantastic. The tower designed by lead architect David Adjaye is reminiscent of Yoruba crowns from Ghana, Adjaye’s birthplace. A glass-walled elevator takes visitors back in time to the 1400s, when the African slave trade started. The rise that follows symbolizes African Americans’ progress toward equality and highlights their many accomplishments. The upper levels concentrate on the contemporary, from art, science, and technological advances to dance routines. The last exhibit depicts Obama’s inauguration in 2009, which serves as a reminder of progress and the distances ahead.
