When the leaked film of Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson and drummer Tommy Lee was broadcast on the internet in 1995 after it was taken from their garage by an angry electrician after Lee threatened him with a shotgun, it was a controversy unlike any other. Just like you do.
It’s a crazy tale, and it’s now the subject of a new Disney Plus comedy limited series starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan. Or at least that’s how I see it: the two of them entirely dissolve into their respective characters.
Was it simple to get into your inner rock star? ‘Easy is not a word that comes to mind when I think of the process,’ Sebastian Stan says, his voice distant even over Zoom.
‘It was definitely terrifying.’ When you’re portraying someone well-known, there’s a lot for you to go out and study for, so it’s quite a struggle. Especially coming from someone who doesn’t have a single tattoo.’
Tommy Lee is a divisive character. He was sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting Pamela Anderson, which resulted in the end of their marriage. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and flamboyant attitude.
‘I was startled at how little I knew about him, particularly his upbringing.’ ‘I have a European background [Stan was born in Romania] and I learned about his going to America from Greece,’ he adds.

‘His mother didn’t speak English while he was growing up for the first few years of his life, and I believe it had an impact on his discovery of the drums as a means of self-expression.’
We’ve never seen Stan in such a hedonistic role before. Tommy is constantly inebriated and on medications, and in one rather absurd scene, he declares his love for Pamela via his animatronic, talking penis.
I’m curious if he enjoyed expressing his wild side. I joke that from time to time, we’ll hear about him wrecking the occasional hotel room. He can’t see the amusing side of things.
‘There’s a lot more to the tale than that,’ he adds, putting me in my place. ‘I hope you got something more out of it than what you’re talking about right now because they were dealing with a degree of scrutiny that you and I don’t know anything about.’
‘I would argue that in this digital era, we’ve become used to a certain degree of stupidity.’ People [on social media] might act in a certain way without really considering the consequences for the person on the other end.’

Ignorance or no, it does seem a strange line for him to take. Pam & Tommy is an exploitative show in its very nature. It focuses on the worst moment of Pamela Anderson’s life and plays it mostly for laughs.
Pamela refused to work with the producers or Lily James on the program, and those close to Pam said that the entire affair is damaging to her.

Still, it’s not for me to cast doubt on the hero of Captain America 1 and, um, Captain America 2. And he’s still optimistic that the show will be able to shift the focus of the story away from the scandal.
‘That was the authors’ purpose, and they accomplished it admirably.’ I’m sure the real Pamela Anderson would have something to say about whether or not the program succeeds, but ignorance is bliss, right?
