PSG’s incredible transfer window provides best chance yet of Champions League glory

The biggest transfers 2021 is a transfer window that has been filled with high-profile signings. PSG have had the biggest signing of them all, bringing in Neymar from Barcelona for a world record fee.

“Are there any big signings planned? We’ll do some, and some, and some, and some, and some, and some, and some, and some,”

The Paris Saint-Germain chairman has a huge smile on his face as he answers a question from L’Equipe regarding moves this summer. The season has just finished, and it’s May. The transfer window is already on everyone’s thoughts. Can PSG truly improve their team? How much money do they have? Who are they going to get?

It’s reasonable to assume that Al-Khelaifi wasn’t lying after two months.

The major signings have arrived, and the shopping hasn’t ended yet. PSG has just signed Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos, and Gianluigi Donnarumma. There are still a few major players on the club’s radar. According to ESPN last week, Paul Pogba is the first choice in midfield. If Everton approve, Moise Kean would be welcome back on loan. Eduardo Camavinga of Stade Rennes is a possible replacement for Pogba if Les Parisiens are unable to bring the 2018 World Cup champion home. According to ESPN, Lazio attacker Joaquin Correa is a favorite of both sports director Leonardo and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Not for nothing, PSG was also eager to lure Lionel Messi to the French capital. It’s all for nothing now, since ESPN reports that he’s signed a new deal with Barcelona, but the intention was clear.

In February, ESPN reported that the team will be looking for free agents. With Wijnaldum, Donnarumma, and Ramos, PSG has done exactly that. This is probably the greatest list of free agents ever signed by the same team in the same window. They also expanded their search to include players with just one year remaining on their contracts, such as Pogba and Camavinga, who may offer excellent value and inexpensive possibilities.

The sole exception is Hakimi. PSG were looking for a right-back, while Inter Milan wanted to generate money by selling the 22-year-old Moroccan international. He is perhaps Europe’s finest player in his position, and €60 million is a reasonable transfer price.

Don’t forget that Neymar (until 2025) and Angel Di Maria (2022) also signed new contracts throughout the season, as did Juan Bernat (2025) and Julian Draxler (2024).

Leonardo was under a lot of stress. He needed to complete a good window installation. There is still a long way to go, particularly in terms of finding new homes for players who are no longer in Pochettino’s plans, but the players he has brought in have so far surpassed expectations. Pochettino is delighted at how much stronger his team has become. Although certain players will go (Mitchel Bakker has already joined Bayer Leverkusen, while Leandro Paredes, Pablo Sarabia, Ander Herrera, Layvin Kurzawa, and Thilo Kehrer are all available), this team’s potential is already scary.

Of course, new additions, particularly big ones, may create some friction in the locker room. The arrival of Donnarumma, who will be a direct competition for Keylor Navas’ spot in the squad, has angered the goalkeeper. After a strong season, the Costa Rica vice-captain couldn’t understand why they would bring in another goalkeeper. The presence of Ramos, who won’t be there to sit on the bench, irritated Presnel Kimpembe as well.

Al-Khelaifi said, “We will never cease being ambitious.” PSG wanted to make a statement after two quiet summers in the market. They wanted to show the other major European teams that they meant business after losing the Champions League final and semifinal in back-to-back years, particularly with financial fair play rules easing up.

They also sought to demonstrate their worth to a particular Kylian Mbappe. Negotiations for a new deal are still underway, and the team’s competitiveness has always been a priority. Mbappe’s message, which he is in the last year of his contract, is simple: “Show me that we can put together a squad capable of winning the Champions League.” They’re attempting to persuade him to remain. The acquisitions have pleased the Frenchman, and he thinks Pochettino will turn this team into something exceptional. However, he has yet to sign a new deal.

PSG has dominated this transfer window so far. However, there is a sense among members of the club and the recruiting staff that the buying binge is far from over, and that there will be more to come.

Qatar Sports Investments bought the team ten years ago and has been pursuing the Champions League ever since. With Pochettino in charge and with a great team at his disposal, combined with the experiences of the last two seasons, there is a strong feeling that they have never been so close to reaching that objective.

The soccer transfer window 2021 is a fantastic opportunity for PSG to win the Champions League. PSG’s incredible transfer window provides best chance yet of Champions League glory.
